Property Description

“A tranquil retreat between the river and the sea….”

These traditional holiday cottages have all been tastefully modernised and furnished. They are situated along a quiet country lane, backed by farmland with south-facing views over the beautiful River Stinchar and the surrounding South Ayrshire countryside. The cottages are all within several hundred yards of one another near the seaside village of Ballantrae with its maritime climate of early springs and mild autumns. Castlehill and neighbouring Windyknowe both provide very spacious, high standard accommodation suitable for larger parties - both have superb large kitchen/dining-rooms for entertaining, they overlook the river and are set within sheltered landscaped gardens. High Mains Cottage stands alone and is set back from the lane. Stinchar Cottage is at the edge of the village in a lovely position between two bridges and with a riverside garden.
With marked river, woodland, seaside and farm walks direct from the door, the properties are situated on the Ayrshire Coastal Path, Scotland’s long distance walking route, 100 miles along one of the finest panoramic coastlines of the British Isles. The coastline is crowned with a superb backdrop of the ever-changing profile of Ailsa Craig and the mountains of Arran across the Firth of Clyde. The area is steeped in history and teeming with wildlife, including red squirrels, deer, otters and seals and is a haven for bird watchers on the moors and estuary. Ballantrae has a network of paths, two public tennis courts and the attractive harbour, the beach, pub, shop and several cafes are all within walking distance of the properties. Fly fishing may be available by prior arrangement.
Inland there are gardens and castles to visit, the Galloway Forest Park, racing at Ayr and a choice of golf courses. Culzean Castle (owned by the National Trust for Scotland) is spectacular and together with its surrounding country park is Ayrshire’s most popular tourist attraction. Castle Kennedy and Glenwhan are just two of the wonderful west coast gardens nearby. The championship golf courses of Turnberry and Troon are within easy reach but there are numerous smaller and friendly courses within the area. Day trips to Ireland can be taken from Stranraer, whilst a drive north leads to Ayr, a traditional seaside town and birthplace of Robbie Burns. Glasgow and Edinburgh are easily reached for a day out.
