Property Description

In a peaceful countryside setting, within 13 acres of the owner’s land, this spacious 19th-century farmhouse is found just a mile from the attractive coast of the Solway, with its many sandy beaches. Spacious and tastefully furnished, it boasts an Aga and wood-burning stove, as well as a large landscaped garden in which to relax.
The picturesque town of Kirkcudbright lies just 3 miles away, made up of beautifully painted houses of assorted architecture – including Georgian villas and Victorian town houses. Several art and antique shops reflect the fact that it was once the centre of an artists’ colony, established by Edward Hornel, an important member of the 19th-century Scottish arts establishment. Broughton House (once the artist’s home), together with its delightful Japanese garden, is open to the public (April to Oct) and displays some of his work. Several other art galleries are liberally sprinkled around the town, including the Tolbooth Art Centre and the Harbour Cottage Gallery. A further place of interest within the town is McLellan’s Castle – towering above Kirkcudbright’s pretty harbour – which was built for the Provost Sir Thomas McLellan of Bombie; whilst the Stewartry Museum houses a collection of assorted items representing the life and times of the Solway coast. Not far away lies the Gatehouse of Fleet, which became the ‘Glasgow’ of the Solway, and was important during the boom of the cotton industry. A former bobbin mill now serves as the Mill on the Fleet Museum, tracing the history of Gatehouse and Galloway. A little further west, Newton Stewart lies as a quiet market town beside the River Cree, where there is excellent salmon and trout fishing, whilst for walkers, the Galloway Forest Park provides magnificent routes, with the Southern Upland Way passing through. Castle Douglas (10 miles) offers an interesting selection of local food shops, whilst Threave Castle and the spectacular Threave Gardens (NTS) are well worth visiting.
