The local area offers hill walking, pony trekking, cycling, canoeing and paragliding. A little further afield lies the pretty town of Hay-on-Wye, famously known for one thing - bookshops - of which there are over twenty in the small town. With its spectacular backdrop of Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains, together with its creaky little streets, riverside parties and travelling fairs (the best of which is the Hay Literary Festival when London’s literary world decamps on Hay), this makes an alternative and enjoyable day out. Easily accessible is Ludlow, perched on a hill, and which is one of England’s most picturesque towns. It comprises a cluster of beautifully preserved black-and-white, half-timbered buildings packed around a craggy stone castle, with rural Shropshire forming a dreamy backdrop. Other places of interest to visit include Presteigne and the spa town of Llanrindod Wells, which are both within a twenty-minute drive. Shops ⅓ mile.
