Property Description

Set in the beautiful north Pennines, Britain’s ‘last undiscovered wilderness’, with spectacular views from its superb fellside position, this 18th-century stone house has been renovated to a very high standard. Adjoining the owners’ home and making the perfect rural retreat, it is both comfortably furnished and filled with character, with exposed beams and open fires. All five of the beautiful bedrooms have been individually furnished and benefit from en-suite facilities, and large terraced garden and first floor verandah. Atmospherically suited and perfectly situated as a touring base, the surrounding area is alive with a wealth of natural and historical treasures, with the Lake District and the Scottish Borders lying less than an hour’s drive away.
Well worth a visit is the historic Hadrian’s Wall where visitors can walk along designated footpaths alongside the wall. Throughout the summer months a bus service specially routed for visitors makes an alternative way to tour this amazing and interesting piece of history. Alston, 4 miles, the highest market town in England, provides the terminus for the narrow-gauge South Tynedale Railway and offers an interesting array of shops, inns, restaurants and an arts and crafts gallery. For family days out, Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre and Killhope Lead Mining Museum are both within an easy drive, whilst Rheged Visitor Centre, Britain’s largest grass-covered building, is within an easy drive of Penrith. The Eden Ostrich World at Melmerby, the delightful Thortergills waterfalls, and the ancient stone circle of Long Meg and Her Daughters are nearby. The theatre, Turkish baths and leisure facilities of Carlisle are a little further afield. Closer to home, there are many activities to be enjoyed, including fishing, canoeing, shooting, golf, horse riding and skiing. Excellent walking, from the doorstep, along the Pennine Way. Pub 2½ miles.

Spacious living room with large open fire, beams, rugs on wooden floor and French doors to patio. Rustic dining-room leading to sun room/entrance lobby. Well-equipped pine-fitted kitchen with ornamental antique range and small breakfast area. Double bedroom with en-suite shower room/W.C. and French door to patio. First floor: Three double bedrooms (one with additional single bed for +1), each with en-suite bathroom/W.C. Twin-bedded room with en-suite bathroom/W.C.
