The resort of Sidmouth has one of the best beaches within the area, and is also host to one of the country’s best folk festivals in the summer - the International Folk Song and Dance Festival proves very popular, both with visitors and locals alike. Seaton, Exmouth and Lyme Regis all provide great days out and plenty of family entertainment. The East Devon Heritage Coastline offers superb coastal walks and fantastic scenery, and there is also golf and fishing locally.
The pretty towns of Branscombe, Beer and Colyton and are all easily accessible, and several National Trust properties can be found in the area. Knightshayes Court is an impressive house set within woodland, and designed by William Burges - it has a rich interior combining medieval romanticism with lavish Victorian decoration. The grounds feature a lily pool and topiary, rare shrubs and a wealth of seasonal colour, and there are woodland walks to enjoy. Killerton, near Exeter, houses the Paulise de Bush costume collection displayed in period rooms, and outside, the delightful hillside garden has an ice house and rustic-style summer house.
