Cognac itself has a delightful centre with plenty of shopping streets, cafes and restaurants as well as all the famous Cognac distilleries such as Hennessy, and Rémy Martin. The impressive château in which François 1st was born now houses the Otard brandy cellars and also makes for an interesting visit. The superb morning market is a must to visit with its fantastic choice of fresh farm produce, regional wines, seafood, and poultry along with ready-made food from specialist delicatessen and patissiers. The golf course at Sainte Brice will be a must, whilst the sandy Atlantic beaches near Royan are great for a day trip. La Rochelle with its enchanting harbour is less than an hour away. There is an activity park nearby with open air water features and canoeing plus stables for horse riding. Fly via La Rochelle or Angoulême.
