In Lyme Regis you can visit the Dinosaur Museum, working watermill, small theatre and cinema, or simply enjoy the winding streets of the old quarter, with its numerous shops, restaurants and cafes. The Cobb, surrounding the ancient harbour, is famous for its literary connections, featuring in both Jane Austen’s Persuasion and John Fowle’s novel and film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. There is no end of interesting places within easy reach by car: go fossil hunting on Charmouth beach, take the miniature train at Beer or tram at Seaton, explore Thomas Hardy’s Casterbridge (Dorchester), or pay a visit to Forde Abbey and a host of NT sites.
