Ancient Bridport (2 miles) has Saxon origins and was once an important rope-making centre. The amount of space needed to make rope is said to account for the town’s exceptionally broad streets, now the base for two popular weekly markets. There is a good choice of shops, a cinema and a new sports centre. A mile further on, West Bay has a harbour where fishing trips and rowing boat hire are available. The stunning Chesil Beach runs from here and stretches 17 miles along the coast to Weymouth. There are several other good beaches within easy reach of The Old Piggeries – at Charmouth, Seatown and, slightly further, at the charming and popular seaside resort of Lyme Regis, which offers plenty of attractions for visitors.
Walkers can enjoy meandering country footpaths passing through tranquil countryside, or more energetic hikes on the coastal path along the tops of towering cliffs, where the views are breathtaking. There are plenty of good country inns to offer refreshment. Inland, there are many picturesque villages to explore, with their pretty thatched roofs and interesting histories. Near the little town of Chard is Hornsbury Mill with its rural life displays, and beautiful Forde Abbey and gardens. Nearby is Crewkerne, an old-fashioned market town, with many bookshops and second-hand shops to explore. Dorchester is 7 miles. Golf 3 miles. Riding locally.
